A Mother's’Village, Inc is an Arizona Non Profit with Federal 501 (c) 3 tax exempt status. A Mother's Village, Inc. (AMV) caters to the underserved and undervalued single mother population of Maricopa County.

Single mothers over the past decade have become more of a norm rather than an exception. We at AMV are positioned to assist the single mother with skill/job training, educational scholarships and adequate housing through rent payment assistance. We also assist the single mother with financial assistance in placing her children in quality day care and school.

According to the US Census in 2000 there were 1,132,886 households out of which 33.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.60% were married couples living together, while 10.70% had a female householder with no husband present or in other words: single mothers.   In 2003, 13 percent of people in Maricopa County were in poverty. Eighteen percent of related children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 6 percent of people 65 years old and over. Ten percent of all families and 26 percent of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level.

We choose to assist single mothers with education and training due to the statistical fact that there is a linear correlation between education and income. As the mother’s education and skill set increases so will her ability to maintain her fiduciary responsibility to her household without government or other outside assistance. Her children will also be more apt to pursue higher education directly after high school, which will in turn break the cycle of poverty.

Fifty percent of renters in Maricopa County spend 30% or more of their income on rent. Knowing that 26% of single mothers live below the poverty level it is imperative that rent payment assistance be provided to ensure quality, clean and safe housing. The children of Maricopa County deserve the opportunity for a better and more equitable life.

We provide daycare assistance to allow the mother to concentrate on her educational pursuit and employment responsibilities. Again, we maintain the motto of “A Hand Up and Not A Hand Out.” Our assistance and training is designed to enable the single mother to the capability of being the sole provider for her household.
